John grew up in Wilmington, California with the exception of the brief time during WW II when we lived in Grants Pass, Oregon.
From September of 1954, he spent next 20 years active duty service at assignments that included VF-212 at NAS Moffett Field, VC-3 which later became VF (AW)-3 and GMGRU-2 in Chincoteague, VA. With the closing of NAS Chincoteague in 1958, he was transferred to Naval Missile Center Pt. Mugu, CA. The end of 1961, he transferred VR-21 at NAS Barbers Point, HI where he was awarded his Air Crewman designation. Early 1965 he was assigned to VAW-11 Det. Q, NAS North Island, CA where he completed a WESTPAC aboard the USS Bennington CVS-20. Following his deployment, he was sent to VS-41 at NAS North Island. In July, 1969 he was at Travis AFB watching the Moon walk awaiting transportation to Yokosuka Japan to join VS-29 aboard the USS Kearsarge CVS-33 where he completed another WESTPAC in 1972 aboard the USS Ticonderoga CVS-14 and retired in March 1974.
John is married to Janice Ann Rowe Johnson and they live in Puyallup, WA. They have the great fortune of having 5 children: Susan (David) of Fairfax, VA, Paul of Puyallup, WA, Cyndi (Jim) and Carmen (Rob) of Graham and Dana of Renton; and 11grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
